Two short romanticism stories which are both about how desperate, pitiful, and trapped the main characters are hence showing us how happy they are when they get to escape their problems in the worst way: death.

A balloon is an object which can symbolize flight or freedom, but in this case, those meanings are obviously not what the story is trying to get at you. It’s almost the opposite.
